Preparatory ranks

Why some JoSAA cutoff ranks end in P.

A trailing P is part of the published rank value. It marks a preparatory rank and changes how that row must be interpreted.

01

P is not a thousands or percentile suffix

The value belongs to a preparatory rank list. Removing the suffix and treating it as an ordinary CRL or category rank would create a false comparison.

02

The explorer preserves the original value

Preparatory values remain visible with P. Numeric tables and trend summaries exclude them when an ordinary rank scale is required, so 28P is never silently sorted beside rank 28.

03

Check eligibility before using the row

Preparatory-course eligibility follows JoSAA and institute rules. A historical P row is not evidence that every candidate with a nearby number is eligible.

Examples are tied to verified rows.

The numerical examples in this guide come from the cutoff files included in JEE Cutoff Explorer. They illustrate how to read a row; they do not predict future allotments or replace the current counselling brochure.
