How to read JoSAA opening and closing ranks.
A JoSAA cutoff is not one number for a college. It is the result of one institute, programme, category, seat pool, quota and counselling round.
Opening rank and closing rank describe one row
The opening rank is the best rank allotted in that exact row. The closing rank is the last allotted rank in the same row. A larger closing-rank number means the programme remained available further down that particular rank list.

Match every dimension before comparing
Institute and programme are only the beginning. Category, quota and gender pool can change the rank range substantially.
- OPEN is not directly comparable with OBC-NCL, EWS, SC or ST
- Female-only and Gender-Neutral pools are separate
- NIT Home State and Other State rows are separate
- Compare the same counselling round when checking movement
Use the final round for the last allotted rank
The final regular JoSAA round is usually the clearest view of the last admitted rank for that year. Earlier rounds remain useful for understanding movement, but should not be relabeled as the final cutoff.
